While cleaning the office today I came across my journal notes from when I still was a graduate student at Ohio State.  I had just returned from a two-day job interview at then-named Carroll College in Waukesha, Wisconsin. Much has changed since then! I continue working against changing too much too quickly.

I still use and keep journals now–some paper and pencil— though I now do most journaling using software dedicated to that function. Though I have explored the utility of many apps, my personal preference at the moment is DayOne.

I particularly use journaling to follow the recommendations of Jane Hart on the value (I would argue, the necessity) of reflecting on my work day accomplishments and failures and for short and long-term goal setting. This was one of many lessons I learned from Jane this past year.  I encourage my students and clients to create regular times for written reflection.

What journaling software do you use? Why?

  1. I love your journal from 1977, and seeing your thought process as you were starting out! How cool to look back in time at how your career has evolved so powerfully over the years – reminds me of Steve Jobs’ commencement speech about connecting the dots in retrospect (http://news.stanford.edu/2005/06/14/jobs-061505/). Thank you for sharing this! Perhaps your post will motivate me to take a break from my old fashioned paper journal to try out a journaling app, despite my concerns about the lack of privacy on electronic platforms. I’ve found that the physical act of writing and contemplating seems to provide me with a unique emotional benefit that I can’t seem to get with typing, but I’m always willing to keep trying ;)!

  2. Hello Dr. Simpson!

I really enjoy using the Day One software that you introduced us research assistants to because of the all the tools it has to offer. How I am able to write in multiple places, add photos, post my location, and am able to share my notes with others if needed.
